Natural Landmark

Moara Dracului Gorges

A wild natural setting in the Rarău Mountains, ideal for hiking, photography and discovering the mountain relief step by step.

Description

Moara Dracului Gorges (the Romanian name is Cheile Moara Dracului, translated into English as “Devil’s Mill Gorges”) are among the natural attractions that reveal a wilder and more immersive side of the Rarău Mountains. Unlike viewpoints, where the landscape opens widely towards the surrounding peaks, here the experience is more direct and grounded: the trail, the rocks, the vegetation and the shaded areas create a more intimate setting, allowing visitors to feel the relief and atmosphere of the place more closely. The gorges can be seen as a natural gateway towards the higher area of Rarău, especially for travellers who do not simply want to reach Skywalk Rarău – Piatra Șoimului, but wish to gradually understand the landscape that surrounds it.

Exploring the area offers a sequence of natural scenes: rock walls, trail sections, mountain vegetation, narrower passages and perspectives that change as the visitor advances along the route. Moara Dracului Gorges are suitable for hiking, photography and observing the details of the mountain relief, especially for tourists who prefer places with an authentic atmosphere, where the experience unfolds step by step. This is not just a point to check off on a map, but an attraction that requires attention to the path, the light, the textures of the rocks and the way nature shapes the route. Depending on the season and ground conditions, the place can have different rhythms: greener and more shaded during the warm season, more austere and expressive during colder periods. This combination of movement, silence, relief and discovery makes the area valuable for those interested in mountain landscapes, nature photography and less hurried experiences.

As part of a visit to the Rarău area, Moara Dracului Gorges can be naturally connected with Popii Rarăului, Pietrele Doamnei Reserve, Rarău Peak and Skywalk Rarău. They complete the image of the Rarău Mountains through a dimension different from panoramic viewpoints: they do not only offer a view from above, but direct contact with the trail and the natural forms of the mountain. The attraction is recommended for active visitors, nature lovers, photographers and travellers who want to discover Bukovina through places that are less urban, less developed and closer to the authentic character of the mountain. For a safe and enjoyable experience, the visit should be adapted to the weather, equipment, available time and current trail conditions.
